Why We Don't Care

You're driving in your car, and as you slow down to stop for the red traffic light you're approaching, you notice a person holding a cardboard sign. Both the person and the sign looking equally as worn. Whether the sign says "Will Work For Food", or "Homeless, Anything Will Help,", you wished you had brought your cloaking device so as you can become invisible waiting for the light to turn green and you can escape that most uncomfortable and awkward moment. While it is true that panhandlers can yield up to $50 to $100 per day or more, not all people who 'truly' need to resort to begging find it that lucrative, nor use begging as a viable 'business strategy'. The rest of us who do have a place of our own to rest our heads at night, whether it be a mobile home or a mansion, and eat 3 meals a day, whether it be canned Spam or caviar, wouldn't feel any of the pain that someone who is homeless feels. That would take an emotion inside of us called empathy, which diminishes with every dollar we make. In a recent study (scientificamerican.com/article/how-wealth-reduces-compassion), it was proven that compassion, empathy, and the sensitivity needed to "love thy neighbor" decreases the more our own needs are met. We 'know' the suffering of hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing their homes and countries, but we don't 'feel' enough to help. We 'see' the homeless men, woman and children on the streets, but don't 'feel' enough to reach out. We 'hear' of the plight of the working poor living week to week out of motels in our own cities, but don't 'feel' enough to connect. While some of us do try to help, most of us are stuck in our own little world with our own agendas. We're content in our own comfort zones and don't want to come out of our box. We take what we have for granted, like it always has been and will always be there. As a wise old man once said; "There is so much in this world that is broken...pick something up and fix it." Life happens to everyone, and no one is born with a birthmark on their forehead that says; 'Destined To Be Homeless' Click HERE to see the Video. HOMELESSNESS...Working On A Cure!
